Adding categories and articles
So once you’ve created and customized your knowledge base, you’re ready to fill it with great content.
The first step is to set up your categories. In the upper menu, you will see a book icon. This is how you can quickly access your knowledge base. So right now, we don’t have any articles in there.
The first thing to do is to select the ‘Categories’ button here. You can see I’ve set up three categories. If you click on any of the categories, you can customize them. So you can add an icon, change the name, change the slug, and select whether it’s a top-level category or a subcategory under one of the other categories. You can also give it a description. Once you’ve made any changes, click ‘Save Category’ and then navigate back.
To create a new category, click the ‘New Category’ button. Let’s enter a name. It’s automatically populated with a relevant slug. We can add an icon. We can select whether it’s a top-level category or a subcategory. Once you’ve done that, you can change the order in which your categories will appear.
So once we’ve set up our categories, it’s time to create our articles. You can see right now we don’t have any articles available. So in the top-right hand corner, click on the green ‘New Article’ button.
The first step is to create a title. So let’s create “What is a rocket?” You will find that will automatically populate the slug, the URL. Status will determine whether it’s ‘Draft,’ ‘Published,’ or ‘Archived.’ You can set visibility as ‘Public’ so everyone has access to it or you can set it ‘Private,’ which meansit’s only available to team members associated with this property.
You can assign it to a category. So let’s assign it to Rockets. You can change the language. We only have set it up right now in English. And you can change the author as well. And also, you can connect it to other articles, but seeing we don’t have any, that’s why there are none available in there.
So we’ve set our ‘Heading.’ Now we’re going to create a ‘Subtitle.’ And I’m getting the information for this article directly from the NASA website, so our subheading will be: “This article is part of the NASA Knows (Grades K-4) series.”
Next, we can just use blocks to create our article. So the first thing we want to do is add an image. So click on the image icon and we’ll upload our first image in this Gallery which gives you access to all images that you’ve uploaded in the past. So let’s select this image from the Gallery. Great!
Next, we’re going to add a new block. Let’s add another header: “How does a Rocket Engine Work?” Let’s add a paragraph with text. Voila! And, after the text, let’s upload a video. So we’re gonna source our video from YouTube. The Video URL is here. So you can change the start time and the end time and there are all these options that you can customize. Great! Now we’ve got our video as well.
You can also add snippets of code as a block or add dividers or a table of contents. The blocks are interchangeable and we can move the video all the way to the top. Done!
Once you’re done customizing your article, just click ‘Publish’ and you’re set! You can view the site by just clicking the ‘View Site’ button in the top right-hand corner. And we can click on ‘Rockets’ and we can have a look at our article. All set!
Going back to that original menu, you can see now that we have an article in here: “What is a Rocket?” You can see it’s available in English. The author is Adrian, and the category Rockets. We haven’t received any feedback for it as well. You can sort your articles by any of these options.
That’s it! You’re all set.
